ND Band to present "Marching to Motown" Concert

The Notre Dame Band is proud to present a special concert titled Marching to Motown on Sunday, October 2 at 3 pm in Leighton Concert Hall at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.  Marching to Motown is a historical montage celebrating the rich history of African American music.  Exploring the post-civil war sounds of African American folk music, ragtime, and the beginning of jazz, the concert will feature the evolution of music that led to rock and roll.

The concert will be narrated by WVPE 88.1 announcer Karl Smith, and will tell the story of the great composers Will Marion Cook, Scott Joplin, James Reese Europe, Duke Ellington, and Ray Charles through performances by the Notre Dame Symphonic Winds, Jazz Band I, and New Orleans Brass Band.

The second half of the concert will feature Billy 'Stix' Nicks and The Motown Machine performing some of Motown's greatest hits. Nicks, a South Bend native, was one of the original Motown drummers and has performed with legendary artists including Junior Walker, Louis Armstrong, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations.

The October 2 concert is a free but ticketed event. To acquire tickets, visit http://dpactickets.nd.edu/single/SYOS.aspx?p=8528 or contact the DPAC Ticket Office at (574) 631-2800.

The Band was the recipient of the Sudler Trophy, considered the Heisman Trophy for college bands, and was declared a "Landmark of American Music" by the Indiana Music Educators Association.
